Meet-A-Teach at CreateHere

We’ve all got opinions on the state of Hamilton County’s public schools. The question is, how often do we get the chance to voice those opinions? What’s more, how often do we get to talk with teachers, with those who know the system and its students so well?

The Public Education Foundation will be hosting Meet-A-Teach at CreateHere on Thursday, November 20. Bring a friend and join the conversation about public education. Ask current teachers your most pressing questions, share your concerns and hopes for the system, and contribute to the bigger picture. All are welcome.

Battle Academy Art Receives Funds from StereoType

CreativInc, an up and coming Chattanooga art group, recently made a visit to Battle Academy to donate a $1,000 check and $500 worth of art materials from Pearl Art Store of Atlanta to benefit the elementary school’s art department.

These funds were proceeds from the event “StereoType,” held at The Church on Rossville Avenue on October 24. The underground art party featured graffiti artists, photographers, and other artists from Chattanooga and Atlanta. Approximately 200 people attended the event, which featured a live graffiti mural-painting and atmospheric tunes from ToneHarm.

CreativInc founder Andrew Wright expects this event, and its successful fundraising, to be the first of many for Chattanooga. “We hope to have as much support from sponsors and Chattanoogans for our next event as we did with our first event,” he said.

Swim Series Discussion: Surviving in Tough Economic Times

According to research, one third of all new businesses fail after two years, and fifty-six percent fail after four years. Add to this fact the devastating realities of the current economic crisis, and it’s easy to see why small-business owners are stressed. But there’s hope, and not surprisingly, it comes from those who have faired tough economic times: successful business owners.

SpringBoard will be hosting its bimonthly seminar, the Swim Series, next Tuesday, November 18, to provide strategies for business owners coping with the recession. The event will bring successful local entrepreneurs together to discuss practical ways to survive difficult economic times.

Speakers for the event include Jonathan Bragdon, CEO of Tricycle, who will provide an entrepreneur’s perspective; Timothy Kelly, CEO of Kelly Car Dealerships, who brings expertise in the field of marketing; and Andy Moore, Vice President of Private Client Services at First Tennessee Bank, with years of experience in the financial sector.

“Surviving in Tough Economic Times” will take place at CreateHere, 55 E. Main Street, and runs from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Attendees are asked to RSVP by contacting Sheldon Grizzle at 423.648.2195. This event is free for SpringBoard graduates, $5 for all others. Space is limited.

Pecha Kucha: A Night of New Discussions

Internationally practiced, Pecha Kucha is a presentation style with boundless possibilities. Prepare twenty slides, each lasting twenty seconds, and six minutes and forty seconds later, see where the conversation goes.

This innovative method is coming to Chattanooga on November 13 for the first time. Hosted at green|spaces, the Pecha Kucha Night starts at 6:20 pm, with a diverse line-up of presenters. The dialogue starts now.

Pecha Kucha Night was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. The key to Pecha Kucha is its patented system that encourages presenters to be succinct: a speaker is allowed 20 images, shown for 20 seconds each. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show.

Pecha Kucha, Japanese for “the sound of conversation,” has tapped into a demand for a forum in which creative work can be easily and informally shown, without having to rent a gallery or chat up a magazine editor. This is a global demand: Pecha Kucha Night, without any pushing, has spread virally to over 100 cities across the world.

Cast Your Vote: Chattanooga Arts Up For Honors

AmericanStyle Magazine recently released a survey to identify the top 25 most attractive arts destinations of 2009, and for the first time, Chattanooga made it on the ballot. Should Chattanooga win in the mid-size city category, the entire community would receive an enormous amount of publicity in the national art scene.

At the risk of appearing biased, CreateHere asks you to cast a vote for Chattanooga. Let’s celebrate our city and get the word out!

Regardless of the competition’s results, AmericanStyle magazine will feature an article on the arts in Chattanooga in the February 2009 edition.

To vote for your favorite large, mid-size (Chattanooga!) and small cities for contemporary art, visit americanstyle.com and click on the Top 25 ballot icon.
